AP* European History: Mastering the Essay is a guide to the only skill that truly matters on the AP European History exam—writing. History teachers are responsible for teaching centuries of content as well as an ever-growing list of skills—among them writing. The balance between content and skill-development is always difficult, and certainly most difficult for Advanced Placement teachers. Students cannot face the AP test in May without a thorough understanding of historical concepts, but neither can they succeed on the test without practiced skills of analysis and written expression. Mastering the Essay was written to provide teachers with a resource for helping students to hone their writing skills within the context of the course content. The accompanying online Teacher’s Guide provides sample essays and scoring guidelines for every exercise. It also includes instructional resources and suggestions for writing skills lessons that can be adapted to any historical unit.
Author, Tony Maccarella, has served as a Reader and Table Leader for the AP European History exam since 2002. He is responsible for scoring AP European History exam questions, supervising other readers, and assisting with the clarification of scoring standards. He knows, firsthand, what it takes to score a 7, 8, or 9 on AP History essays. Mastering the Essay has been written to share his knowledge with AP students and their teachers.
