Basic Concepts of Chemistry
Leo Malone, author of seven successful editions of Basic Concepts of Chemistry, has joined forces with Ted Dolter to create the Eighth Edition of this text. Professor Dolter’s background and expertise in chemical education makes him uniquely qualified to bring a fresh, new dimension to an established text. Many colleges and universities are moving toward an emphasis on Outcomes Assessment, the standardization within an institution of the goals of a course, and the statement of outcomes and the means of assessing how those goals are met. This has had an effect of creating a significant amount of extra work for faculty members, whose training is subject specific, rather than in the administration of educational goals. Our hope is to alleviate some of the burden being thrust upon these faculties by providing a text with a significant amount of assessment information already organized.
The new edition of Basic Concepts of Chemistry continues its focus on the preparatory and basic chemistry market and now includes emphasis on chapter objectives and their assessment at three levels of competency so that both the teacher and student can determine to what degree the material has been assimilated. These levels are entitled Knowledge, Analysis, and Synthesis. Knowledge measures the student’s acquisition of the facts of the science. Analysis requires them to use those facts to solve varied problems. Synthesis challenges them to reorganize the material and apply it to situations that may be beyond the scope of the material presented to that point.
With the addition of CATALYST concept mastery assignments to WileyPLUS, students now have the opportunity to develop even stronger problem solving skills and deeper conceptual understanding. CATALYST empowers students to develop the understanding of essential chemistry concepts needed to work problems they may never have seen before (as opposed to mimicking examples). They develop an understanding of how to assemble the information they need to begin more complex problems and employ strategies to move through them. This skill is absolutely critical in chemistry; students must be able to analyze and approach novel problems and work their way through them.
New to This Edition:
-
Now available with WileyPLUS online learning system, as well as CATALYST concept mastery assignments
-
The new emphasis on outcomes assessment is the driving force for many of the new features, particularly the section objectives, which state the focus of each section, and Assessing the Objectives, which test understanding of section objectives.
-
The “bite size” subdivisions into sections allow the students to have a smooth journey through each Section with each subtopic clearly defined and easily referenced.
-
“Setting a Goal” at the beginning of each part provides in one sentence the overall purpose that the “Objectives” are intended to accomplish.
-
An expanded Making it Real feature showcases topics of current interest relating to the subject at hand, such as chemical forensics and more medical related topics.
-
Numerous worked examples in the text now include Analysis and Synthesis sections which explore concepts in greater depth, and discuss outside relevance.
-
Each chapter includes an Objectives grid at the end of the chapter for the student’s benefit that shows the particular examples, exercises, and chapter problems that relate to a particular objective.
-
The Quantitative chapter on the mole and stoichiometry (Chapter 8 in the seventh edition) has been divided into two chapters (Chapter 6--Quantities in Chemistry, and Chapter 7--Quantitative Relationships in Chemical Reactions) due to the added material on assessment. These two chapters as well as Chapter 5--Chemical Reactions, have been moved ahead of electron structure and bonding. (However, these later two chapters can still be covered earlier, as they represent isolated topics and do not reference the other chapters
-
All chapters (except Nuclear Chemistry and Biochemistry) include a Student Workshop activity, designed as an alternative instructional option to engage groups on students in some hands on aspect of material discussed in the chapter.
