Calculus: Single Variable

The fifth edition of Calculus Single Variable brings together the best of both new and traditional curricula in an effort to meet the needs of even more instructors teaching calculus. The author team's extensive experience teaching from both traditional and innovative books and their expertise in developing innovative problems put them in an unique position to make this new curriculum meaningful to students going into mathematics and those going into the sciences and engineering.

Calculus: Single Variable exhibits the same strengths from earlier editions including the Rule of Four, an emphasis on modeling, exposition that students can read and understand and a flexible approach to technology. The conceptual and modeling problems, praised for their creativity and variety, continue to motivate and challenge students. The fifth edition includes even more problems and additional skill-building exercises.

"We currently use the Connally/Hughes-Hallett book, Functions Modeling Change. I really love this text because it doesn’t just tell students what to do, but it really provides excellent opportunities for them to think critically about the concepts. I also use the Hughes-Hallett book for AP Calculus, and my scores increased dramatically when I switched to it. The year prior to the switch, about 30% of my students got a 3 or higher on the AP Exam. The year we switched, about 50% got a 3 or higher. The next year, students who had used both the PreCalc and the Calculus book, 88% scored 3+ on the AP exam. I call that a Cinderella story!"
