Challenging yet accessible text from the Harvard Consortium prepares students for calculus
The 4th Edition of this groundbreaking text has been written from the top down by the Harvard Consortium to offer a targeted introduction to precalculus procedures. Developed by the Calculus Consortium, Functions Modeling Change is flexible enough to be thought provoking for well-prepared students while still remaining accessible to students with weaker backgrounds. As multiple representations encourage students to reflect on the material, each function is presented symbolically, numerically, graphically, and verbally (the Rule of Four).
"We currently use the Connally/Hughes-Hallett book, Functions Modeling Change. I really love this text because it doesn’t just tell students what to do, but it really provides excellent opportunities for them to think critically about the concepts. I also use the Hughes-Hallett book for AP Calculus, and my scores increased dramatically when I switched to it. The year prior to the switch, about 30% of my students got a 3 or higher on the AP Exam. The year we switched, about 50% got a 3 or higher. The next year, students who had used both the PreCalc and the Calculus book, 88% scored 3+ on the AP exam. I call that a Cinderella story!"
